Kesteven's 1st XV travelled to Spalding for Week 4 of the Midlands 2 East (North) 2013/14 League Competition. Conditions were very wet as Autumn begins to take a firm grip in Lincolnshire.

Spalding suffered relegation last season from Midlands 1 but remain undefeated so far in this season, with wins against Belgrave, Dronfield and Bakewell. Kesteven knew that their first away fixture of the season at Spalding would be a tough encounter.

K's prematch warm up lacked the player focus and determination and this showed in the first 25 minutes of the match. Spalding kicked off the game with some very fierce attacking and it took the home side just 2 minutes to put their first score on the sheet. A fair amount of pressure was placed on the K's defence and when a clearance didn't find touch, Spalding found their opposition sleeping and were able to plough through the Kesteven line of missed tackles and touch down for their first converted try right under the posts.

After 22 minutes, Kesteven were awarded a penalty on the 10 metre line for a handling infringement and Will Cann opened Kesteven's account to narrow the gap to 7-3. An undeterred Spalding restarted the match and when another Kesteven clearance didn't find touch, Spalding were able to pretty much repeat their first converted try on the 25 minute mark to make it 14-3.

Following repeated warnings to K's about discipline over handling in the rucks, Will Cann was yellow carded in the 35th minute and sent to the bin. Spalding responded almost immediately with a well worked try out wide, taking advantage of the now 14-man Kesteven side and increasing their lead to 19-3.

Kesteven were able to make a few breaks in the first half with Martin Carew drawing his man from the back of a ruck to offload to Daniel Turner who between them made some yards before an offload to Alex Ingram moved K's up for one of only a handful of visits to the Spalding 22. Aaron Whitaker was able to carve a significant hole in the Spalding defence and the forwards cleared out the resulting rucks with ease. A vast overlap eventually caught the attention of the attacking Kesteven side and several simple passes along the line found James Cowley out wide, who was able to easily touch down for Kesteven's only try of the match. Spalding's Captain picked up a yellow card for infringement at the ruck and the first half ended 19-8 to Spalding.

In the 2nd half, the heavens opened making for a very slippery game. Spalding started in a similar fashion to their 1st half, breaking through poor Kesteven tackles to add a further 7 points after just 4 minutes of play to lead by 26-8 securing their bonus point. cardCoach Mark Sayle called the first change of the match with Matt Harland coming on at Fly Half for Harry Martin. Harry Martin then came back on 5 minutes later to replace an injured Ken Lines forcing a reshuffle to the K's back line. Full Back Aaron Whitaker moved to Scrum Half.

Just before the hour mark, Spalding were again able to chew through the Kesteven defence for their 5th and last try of the match. This was a well worked try from the Spalding forwards with some good phases of play and exemplary running from depth. Gavin Purvis came on for Will Pert mid way through the 2nd half.

Spalding were awarded a penalty with 10 minutes left on the clock which successfully moved the score line to 31-8. Will Pert came back on the field to replace injured Captain Tom Webster causing a further reshuffle to the Kesteven forwards but Kesteven were unable to make any impact in the remaining time and the game finished at 31-8 to Spalding.

Kesteven were dominant in the scrums with front row Scott Odams, Rob Sheardown and James Cowley dominating their opposite numbers and Daniel Turner was nominated as Man Of The Match.

Kesteven have slipped to 9th out of 12 in the league with just 6 points from their first 4 league matches. Some serious rethinking of passion and determination is required if they are to survive in their new league.
