Kesteven gave their all in a thrilling battle with Dronfield

Kesteven welcomed their old boys to Woodnook for their annual reunion and the sun shone brightly as the two teams took the field. Kesteven made two late changes with Doland and Pert coming nto the starting line up for Gavin Purvis and Graham Smith. Matryn Parker returned at stand off to bring his experience to the team.

Kesteven fielded the kick off and steadily worked their way upfield. Dronfield won a early turnover and took play up to the home 22 where they won a penalty as the Kesteven backs strayed off side at a ruck. The kick was successful to give the visitors an early lead. From the restart Dronfield were penalised and Dan Turner landed a good goa; from 35 metres to level the scores.

Kesteven were keen to move the ball wide and made several good runs, with Dan Turner prominent but they were unable to get the vital break. Dronfield had a very good player at 13 and he it was who did most damage. He broke through with a strong straight run to set up a try after 15 minutes to retake the lead. Kesteven kept on the offensive but were unable to add to their score as two penalties drifted wide. The Dronfield centre then made his mark with a couple more runs as the visitors scored two more tries to take a comfortable lead of 24 - 3 at the break. K's lost the influencial Dan Turner after 33 minutes with a serious facial injury. Mark Sayle came on as replacement.

At the interval Andy Peabody was removed from the second team to replace Pete Dolan. The home team really took the game to Dronfield and the home discipline gave way as they had two players in the sin bin in quick succession as they desperately tried to keep their line intact. The pressure eventually told as Scott Odams forced his way over for a close range try on 52 minutes. He repeated the dose 4 minutes later as Kesteven closed the gap. Wood made a clean break to send Whitaker in for his try. Dronfield were in disarray now and had a player sent off for a dangerous tackle before Hayward found Taylor with a great pass for the young wing to beat his man and race in at the corner. All four tries remained unconverted and the lead was now just a single point with 15 minutes left. Dent came on for Jordan but his appearance was limited to just 17 minutes as he left the field following a head knock. Kesteven tails were up now but Dronfield got a grip of their game and got back in control. They scored with a couple of late penalties to finally extinguish some great Kesteven spirit to run out winners by 30 points to 23.

Kesteven did win two points which may yet be important as they strive to climb the league. Scott Odams deservedly won man of the match and was well supported by Tony Woolerton and Doug Hayward in the pack. In the backs Whittaker was always looking to create space from full back while Taylor took his try well. Wood had a good match at scrum half and Parker kept the team going forward with some neat kicks.
