After last weeks strong statement of intent from Kesteven’s first team, the big away win against Boston was followed up by another impressive performance in the worst of conditions. The persistent rain and depleting light meant that fast flowing rugby would be challenging.
Dan Turner, in his more familiar role in the back row, opened the scoring early with a trademark break. His try was converted by Ben Whinney who was in the mood to cause damage with boot and ball in hand!
The Kesteven scrum was a force all game with Gavin Purvis returning to the front row having been out injured for the previous game. One such scrum provided the perfect platform for secure ball to find it’s way to Whinney to make a break and dance through the East Retford defence to touchdown over the try line. Sadly the conversion attempt was dragged wide.
Whinney then got a chance to rectify his wayward kick when James Goodrich stormed down the wing following some good work by Ben Hall. Goodrich was tackled inches from the tryline but was able to get the ball away to Whinney who duly scored. The conversion, from a not too dissimilar position to the first, was successful.
East Retford’s only points of the game came from a successful penalty kick following an infringement in a ruck from Kesteven.
Whinney completed his hat-trick with another mazey run, carving through the defence to score in the corner. The conversion was again successful.
The final try of the day came from a good box kick by scrum half Adam Draper which was caught by Goodrich who again turned creator to put Davey Hodgson away to score under the posts and make the conversion a mere formality for Whinney.
Final score 33-3
