Kesteven took on Chesterfield at Woodnook hoping to reach the NLD Shield final. The Black Army struck first when Ollie Coyle made a strong break up the left wing but was tackled just short of the line. The ball was recycled and second row Hugo Robinson burrowed over from close range to give Ks a 5-0 lead. Moments later, after a few phases from the Kesteven forwards, the ball was spun out to Coyle who only needed a fraction of space to leave defenders in his wake to score a brilliant try from just inside his own half. Coyle himself added the conversion and in the space of a few minutes Ks had a 12-0 lead. Chesterfield responded well and started to build the phases but the Ks defence was more than up to the task by chopping down any runners that came their way. Kesteven were able to gain territory through Chesterfield indiscipline but were unable to add to their lead and so went in at half-time 12-0 ahead.
The second half kicked off and it was the home side who started the stronger. Luca Cenci made a barnstorming break from the Chesterfield 10 metre line and was tackled just short of the try line. The ball was recycled and Robinson powered over to register his second try of the game and Ks looked fully in control at 17-0. The Chesterfield defence was beginning to tire and strong runs from Cenci, James Jackson and Evan Clark continued to cause problems for the visitors. The game was all but secured when Kesteven's defence forced mistakes from Chesterfield's attack and as a result the ball was spilled by the away side and picked up by Joseph Whaley who showed his pace to sprint in under the posts from half way to score Kesteven's fourth try. Ks weren't done yet and after they turned the ball over on their own try line Coyle, instead of clearing into touch ran the ball out of the in-goal area to demonstrate his speed and score an unbelievable try, covering the length of the pitch. He added the extras to cap off a brilliant performance. Chesterfield never gave up but the Ks defence held firm to record an impressive 29-0 win.
There were many notable performances from the Black Army. Coyle yet again proved what a lethal finisher he is, Cenci put in a tremendous shift in terms of ball carrying in particular, Joe Dickinson had a fine game at 12 but man of the match went to Jackson, who was dominant at 7 in the first half and was a real threat at 10 in the second period.
