A day at the (Wis)bech

After two weeks of training, K's travelled to Wisbech with a slightly depleted squad for the first game between the two clubs. A two-minute silence was held before the game on Armistice Day. Lest we forget.

First Half
K’s kicked off the match and won an early scrum inside the Wisbech 22 after a knock-on from the home team. K's easily won the scrum against a visibly larger pack and carried strongly with probing runs from Oscar, Tom McD, Callum and Nathan, but Wisbech turned the ball over and cleared their lines with a kick.

K's launched more waves of attack with breaks from Will H and Callum, resulting in a penalty. Quick-thinking Will H took it quickly and powered over the line for the opening score, 5-0, with the conversion missed.

From a lineout, Daniel O's strong run broke the gain line allowing Alfred to chip through into the Wisbech 22. Oscar chased well and tackled the defender into touch, but the tackle was deemed high. Wisbech were stuck deep in their half, and Joe D's pressure from the lineout earned a scrum which set up a try for Alfred, who darted over the line from 10m out, 10-0, with the conversion missed.

K's continued to apply the pressure and forced Wisbech into a goalline dropout, which K's handled well, shipping along the backs to Oscar, who touched down for K's third of the game, 15-0 (conversion missed).

K's were dominating the scrum and looking a stronger team. Joe D turned the ball over really well, setting up the backs to free Dylan, who was tackled into touch just short. Tom McD came up with a brilliant tackle and jackal from which Callum's strong run was stopped just short.

However, Wisbech managed to get on the scoresheet just before halftime - their grubber kick-through wasn't dealt with by the K's defence and the good chase from the centre was rewarded with a try.

K’s probed again, this time with a chip over, which almost resulted in a try. Half time, 5-15.

Second Half
K's had made eight changes at halftime. Wisbech's restart was chased well, and Will M was bundled into touch. Early pressure from Wisbech was rewarded with the opening score of the second half, with a good conversion added to narrow the score to 12-15.

After the restart, Wisbech, buoyed by the early score, kicked through again, but Ollie M fielded the ball well and K's earned a penalty, which was kicked into touch just outside the Wisbech 22. From the lineout, Oscar broke through the Wisbech back line to extend the score, 12-20, with the conversion missed.

K's failed to deal with the restart, inviting immediate pressure back on themselves, but were awarded a penalty and the opportunity to clear their lines. Wisbech had the ball, but a conversion from Oscar saw him race over the line for his third of the game, 12-25 (another missed conversion).

K's now applied the pressure. They were almost over again but were held up over the line. From the goal line dropout, Will H caught the ball cleanly and fed Oscar, who scored again, his fourth of the game, to extend the score to 12-30.

Once again, K's failed to deal with the restart, giving Wisbech the ball, but they were unable to make it tell. There was just enough time for Joel to spectacularly keep a kick in play by passing it forward to Rhys to smiles all round! Final score: 12-30.

Post Match
MOTM Oscar - 4 tries says it all - well played!

K's pack dominated a much larger pack from Wisbech, driving well in the scrums. Six tries to two is probably a fair reflection, but there is work to do on conversions, with 12 points being left out there, which would have made the scoreline more flattering.
