Apologies, just a brief match report this week because, frankly, it was too wet to make any notes during the game!
On a horrible, rainy day, with the clubhouse surrounded by a moat, K's faced Melton for the final 15-a-side game of the season. K's were without several of the team that won the NLD Cup final the previous weekend due to illness/injury (Joel, Tom McD, Thom B, Jacob, Callum, Dan W), and lost Thomas H early with a shoulder injury (he'd been playing brilliantly to that point). Despite that, K's still put out a squad of 23 players and were pleased to be able to give game time to those who unfortunately missed out last weekend. Melton, on the other hand, brought their strongest side, looking to recover from a couple of disappointing results.
K's kicked off the game in appallingly wet conditions, with standing water having necessitated the game to be moved from pitch 1 to pitch 4. Wyatt opened the scoring with a great individual effort, chasing his own kick to score under the posts and convert his own try. 7-0.
Melton's large forward pack were playing well, keeping the ball well in horrible, wet conditions - proper old-school rugby. They scored two unconverted tries to take the lead, 7-10.
Wyatt then popped up again to score his, and K's second of the game to take back the lead, 12-10, with the conversion missed due to the difficult underfoot conditions. K's had two tries disallowed, which kept Melton ahead.
Melton then struck back with two tries of their own to take back the lead, 12-20 before Oscar crashed over to narrow the gap, 17-20.
There was time for Melton to grab a late try to seal the game, final score 17-27. Well done Melton!
Man of the Match was Alfie O - great tackling and super hands in tough conditions.
Although K's end the season with a rare defeat, this has been another excellent season. K's have won 16, losing just 4 (although we still dispute the Stamford result LOL). We've taken a whole-squad approach to the majority of those games (we're unable to for NLD games) as we continue to develop a fine squad of young men, who live and breathe rugby values, and who play hard, honest and fair rugby at all times. We've been crowned champions of NLD - the best team across all of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. What is more, we successfully defended the title we won at u14s, AND successfully defended the title that last year's U15s won. To my knowledge, that's the first time the club has achieved this phenomenal feat. Well done boys - we are all very proud of you.
Still to come this season:
- President's Day this coming Sunday, including end-of-season awards
- Tour
- X7s rugby at Tigers (for those available)
Huge thanks to the whole K's U15s community who have helped this season:
Well done everyone! And thank you!
