Excellent dedicated play against a strong Oakham side whom we matched tackle for tackle and try for try!
Charles Grindal waited patiently for the ball to come out to the wing and when it came, was his usual defence-shattering try-scorer.
Ferocious tackling from Toby Watmough stopped many a promising Oakham attack, and when in possession himself, he charged relentlessly for the Oakham line. In defence, he was ably supported by Jack Reynolds, Harry Trundley, Charlie Ward, Will Hardy and Megan Webb on 3 thrilling occasions right on the Kesteven try line, when Oakham had to throw phase after phase of attack at the K's defence before finally going over. Reynolds was also devastating in attack, charging forwards whenever the ball came his way, and making sure he kept hold of it or off-loaded accurately in the tackle, justly earning him the "Match Ball" award.
Peter Jones in his first game for K's, was fearless in defence, including a superb low tackle against an Oakham ball-carrier in full flight.
Great support play from George Davis put him on the receiving end of a well-timed offload from Trundley, allowing Davis to nip round 2 defenders and put the ball over, with Ellis Ward supporting at his shoulder, just in case. E Ward also put in some crunching tackles.
But the moment of the match was when Jonty Ward, who had been harassing the Oakham attack all morning by relentlessly going forward in defence, capitalised on a lazy Oakham pass, scooped up the ball, checked quickly with the ref that he was on-side ("play on lad!") and shot for the line like a greyhound. A thrilling move which won him the Kesteven High Flyer award for the match.
