Fortunately the weather was set fair for a challenging combined fixture against Newark and Syston. K’s u11s took a squad of 16 so were able to field one team with subs - both Newark and Syston fielded 2 teams, meaning K’s played 4 matches non-stop.
Game 1: Newark 1 - 6 Kesteven
Tries from Wyatt, Oscar (3), Max and Ollie Martin, with a late consolation try for Newark resulted in a resounding 6-1 victory for K’s. There was some excellent handling and passing along the line with K’s repeatedly spreading the play from one wing to the other. Strong rucking, tackling and running were the hallmarks of an excellent performance.
Game 2: Syston 1 - 5 Kesteven
An early Jack try was cancelled out by Syston before Ollie went over for a narrow 1-2 lead at half time for K’s. An excellent second half performance saw tries for Alfie O, Wyatt and Ollie resulting in another resounding 5-1 victory for K’s.
Game 3: Syston 4 - 2 Kesteven
Syston opened the scoring before tries from Ollie and Alfie saw K’s lead 2-1 at half time. However, K’s became too narrow in the second half and despite really strong running from Jack, Joe BG (channelling his inner Tom Curry) and Josh, and some touch tackling, particularly from Alfred, Syston scored 3 unanswered tries resulting in a 4-2 win for Syston who played really well and deserved the victory.
Game 4: Newark 3 - 0 Kesteven
A tired K’s team lined up for their 4th consecutive game, this time against a combined Newark team. A very tight and competitive first have was edged 1-0 by Newark who also scored 2 unanswered tries in the second half resulting in a ‘closer than the scoreline suggested’ 3-0 for Newark who were commendably quick off the line in defence - a great lesson for us to learn and develop in our own game.
All games were played in an excellent spirit and there were handshakes and great respect all round at the final whistle. K’s recorded 2 wins and 2 losses against very strong Newark and Syston teams, scoring 13 tries and conceding 9. Well played everyone and thank you to Newark for hosting.
